The Skullgirl is a powerful female being that is the result of an "impure" woman making a wish using the Skull Heart, an object which later merges with the user. Skullgirls are intended to be mindless servants of the Trinity and are tasked with destroying the world, but those with a strong will such as Marie can resist the Skull Heart's influence. Even those who can resist the Skull Heart however experience considerable changes in their personality, becoming more cold and ruthless over time. Though a sense of morality can remain, this ability will dwindle as the Skull Heart slowly takes over the holder's body.

Parasites also become corrupted if their host becomes a Skullgirl. They lose their sense of individuality, though whether or not this means they remain as a separate entity or become one with the Skullgirl or Skull Heart remains unknown.

Appearance[]

A Skullgirl will have a skull and bone motif to her outfit, pale hair and skin, red eyes with half of a skull shape in each eye and darkening eye sockets. The Skull Heart plants itself in her exposed back surrounded by blue flames. Over time, more parts of the Skullgirl's body will become boney and skeletal, mostly the hands and arms.

Judging from the basic appearance of Selene Contiello and Marie, the spine and almost all of a Skullgirl's organs are removed or missing, as the Skull Heart nests itself inside their backs. Parts of Marie's ribcage is exposed with no visible internals at all.

Powers and Abilities[]

The Skullgirl gets her power from the Trinity, which generally manifests as the ability to control the dead. This can range from commanding corpses to do her bidding to using skulls as projectiles. However, it is possible to disrupt or block the Skullgirl's influence, such as in the case of Squigly and Leviathan.

Marie also demonstrates command over a giant and shadowy figure that is always behind her (in her 2nd and 3rd forms) to physically assault her foes.

As seen with Queen Nancy giving birth to Umbrella, a Skullgirl who hasn’t fully become transformed into an undead can give birth to children with SG blood. These children will be born as Skullgirls themselves that aren’t fully fledged but can become full Skullgirls overtime. If these children have their life force siphoned off they will not become full Skullgirls for some time but interference from the Skull Heart might hasten the process. It is unknown if any Skullgirl born children like Umbrella exist or have existed but if they did, aside from presumably becoming the next Skullgirls, they may have also died off from nothing happening to the Skull Heart. Umbrella’s fate has it so that she is the only one capable of destroying the Skull Heart permanently because of her natural connection through it with blood.

SG blood can also be artificially given to someone who has “compatible” blood. It is unknown what their full scale of abilities is since the only example is Painwheel who has her abilities hindered from Brain Drain’s mind control over her. Umbrella who had natural SG blood was able to overpower Brain Drain in her story mode and freed Painwheel from mind control, showing that people with SG blood have a link and can overwhelm psychic influence over them.

Trivia[]

  • The giant figure Marie controls may be the figure of The Great Mother herself.
  • The process of transforming into a Skullgirl is painful, as shown in Filia's ending.
  • Skullgirls are literally (and strictly) females. In the official Skullgirls Facebook page, it was said as an answer to a comment that only a woman can use the Skull Heart.
  • The gender roles and stereotypes are roughly the same as they are in the real world, so chauvinists and slimeballs still exist. The Skullgirl might be equated to a witch hunt, enforcing this sexism.
  • A Skullgirl doesn’t need to be a “completely” transformed Skullgirl in order to have the abilities or traits as Umbrella is confirmed to have necromancy powers and unusual hair and eyes because of her Skullgirl blood.
  • The main difference between an “incomplete” and “complete” fully fledged Skullgirl seems to be that incomplete ones are still alive, aren’t fully corrupted, don’t have the full undead and skull features/traits, as well as lacking the Skull Heart, while the complete ones are undead, fully corrupted and seem to always have the Skull Heart with them.
    • Judging from how Umbrella’s Death Wish color scheme is only an alt that may have limitations and not show the true design (such as how it’s lacks a skull motif) it’s hard to tell if it’s meant to indicate that fully fledged Skullgirls from those who previously just had SG blood don’t need the Skull Heart to be within them as long as they are just near it or if it constantly floating near Umbrella is just the result of sprite limitations.
  • It is said Skullgirls give off a lot of theonite or “theonic” energies which may come from the Skull Heart itself.
  • In early lore before the game there was going to be a place called “Temple of The Skullgirl.” It’s role has likely been replaced by Double’s domains and lair(s).
  • On average it takes about 3-4 people to defeat a Skullgirl.
  • There was a scrapped 4-Headed God that may have had a connection to the Skullgirl in early lore.
  • It seems that individuals with the skull's blood coursing through their veins are able to harness its powers without being bonded to it. This is best shown with Painwheel and Umbrella.
